COVID-19 Moving Policies and Procedures
As you are most likely aware, Governor Cooper has started to lift certain restrictions that were put in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. While we are hopeful that we are on a path to returning to our pre-coronavirus lives, we must acknowledge that things have changed and we must remain careful.
Whether you are healthy and living at our independent living facilities or requiring assisted living, all seniors fall in the most vulnerable age group. Per the CDC, 80% of US coronavirus deaths have been in seniors that are 65 and older. That is why we are following the Governor’s guidelines for assisted living facilities. Our primary goal is to keep you safe and we will continue to take all measures we believe are necessary to do this.
For the time being, we are keeping the majority of our current coronavirus protocols in place, but we will start allowing move-in and move-outs on June 1, 2020. The following policies and procedures will outline what is required by all parties involved in the moving process.
The items below should be discussed with all parties involved in the move, including staff, residents, family and the moving company. Residents, family and moving companies will not be allowed to enter the facility unless these policies and procedures are 100% followed by all parties.
1. Prior to a new resident moving in, deep clean the apartment using the CDC guidelines for home cleaning. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019ncov/daily-life-coping/get-your-household-ready-for-COVID-19.html
2. A Carillon employee must schedule the date of the residents move, as well as, a 2-hour window in which to complete the move of furniture and personal property.
3. Advise the resident to bring as few people as possible to assist with the move. Maximum allowed people will be 4, including the resident. All parties involved in the move process will be required to sign-in and provide contact information.
4. All personnel/family and resident will be required to wear face masks and gloves and will be screened for virus symptoms before first entering the facility. Temperatures will be taken by The Carillon staff.
5. Give the moving crew access to wash their hands with hot water and soap frequently and also provide hand sanitizer.
6. A dedicated elevator will be provided for the move during the 2-hour window. It must be cleaned and disinfected immediately after the move is completed. Current residents will not be allowed to use this elevator until it has been disinfected.
7. Social distancing will be practiced. A Carillon staff member will be doing “traffic control” so that a safe distance can be maintained between the movers and the residents. The staff member must remain with the moving crew during the entire process and the staff member is responsible to make sure all policies and procedures are followed.
8. The personnel/family and resident should be given a face mask and gloves, if they do not already have them.
9. Instruct the resident to discard unneeded boxes after the move. They should be broken down flat and placed by the resident in the designated dumpster bin. Staff should not touch the boxes.
10. If you leave items in your apartment after you move out, it will be assumed that you are abandoning those items. The abandoned items will be disposed of by the staff at your cost and will be deducted from your Security Deposit.
After a New Resident Moves-in at our facility
1. As a new resident, you will be required to shelter in place for 14 days after move-in to ensure you have not contracted the coronavirus. We strongly encourage all residents to remain at the facility and to only leave for essential trips like doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping. All residents returning to the facility are asked to self-sequester for 14 days for their protection and the protection of their fellow residents.
2. Wipe down all items and furniture with disinfecting wipes as you unpack
3. Moving boxes should be disposed of by the resident into the dumpster designated for cardboard. All boxes must be broken down flat prior to being put into the dumpster.
Guidelines given to a resident who is moving to or from our facility
Selecting a moving company
When selecting a moving company, ask if the mover is exercising enhanced safety precautions to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. A responsible mover will take precautions such as the following:
1. All trucks are wiped down inside and outside before and after every move. This includes door handles, steering wheels, dashboards, seatbelts, dollies, hand tools.
2. Moving company employees are required to wash hands before entering the moving truck and before and after all moves.
3. Dispatch times are strategically staggered to avoid overlap of team members in the warehouses.
4. All movers wear gloves on all moving and packing services and dispose of them promptly after.
5. All movers wear Cloth Face Coverings on all moving and packing services.
6. The moving contract can be signed using DocuSign whenever possible.
7. Moving company employees and customers will be asked to abide by the recommended 6-foot distance between people whenever possible.
8. All employees are temperature-checked before each move and any employee having a fever or other COVID-19 symptoms will not be allowed to work. 9. The mover may also be able to give you an estimate via video conferencing instead of an in-person appointment. Ask the mover if they have this service available.
Before the movers come to load your belongings
1. Wipe things down as you pack up. Make time to wipe down the handles on your cabinets or clean your household items before loading them into boxes. 2. Don’t touch your boxes for at least 24 hours. A study released by the CDC suggested that COVID-19 can live on cardboard for up to 24 hours. Knowing that, we encourage you to avoid touching packed boxes for a full 24 hours before your movers arrive. Or hire the mover to pack up your belongings for you. 3. If your move involves an airplane or car, it’s important to remember that some restaurants may still be closed, flights may be limited, and restrictions are different in every country. Be sure to research your destination or travel route and plan accordingly to avoid any interruptions on move day.
